This is the time of year to begin planting salad leaves. With a little watering and care, they just grow on your window sill or anywhere outside, and will provide a neverending supply of fresh, crunchy, tasty leaves for your table. Just imagine… no need to make a trip to the shops and pay, just walk outside your back door and snip!
Last week I bought a Mixed Salad Growing Kit in Lidl and planted it immediately. All it will need for now is scant watering and protection from frost. They were also selling healthy-looking Little Gem lettuce plants – these are now growing outside my back door, protected by a few slug pellets.
Now that the vernal equinox has passed, and the clocks have gone forward, I’m hoping to set up a plastic cloche for growing seeds in trays and looking forward to all sorts of bounty on the kitchen table this summer.
